Thoughts on the legacy:
Ifrit creates the Starscourge, inflicts it on the world out of some Astral feud. This Starscourge becomes the indirect cause of the darkness that's spreading through the realm, darkening the hours of light and turning people into daemons that thrive in the shadows.
Ardyn Lucis Caelumfirst of his name the unburnt is a good king who is blessed by the crystal to fight the Starscourge. Due to the nature of the plague, which infects people and turns them into daemons, killing them through the power of the crystal and light eliminates the chance of the dark miasma emitted from them to contaminate the skies, which would otherwise turn into darkness, sealing away light from the world. Bahamut, one of the Astrals, chooses an Oracle, one of pure heart to aid the King of Light and purify the contaminated on their way.
Ardyn discovers that he can absorb the scourge instead, and takes it on himself to heal people instead of killing them, as well as empowering him together with the crystal's blessing. This however, imbues him with corruption, changes that begin to show in him, and are twisting him from within. When the time comes for him to ascend, however, the gods see Ardyn as corrupted and impure and the crystal chooses another to possess the light, likely another of the same bloodline or just purity- this time a king named Izunia.
According to Ardyn, Izunia decried him as a demon and corruption and shamed him before the people, causing him to become an outcast, however, knowing the twisted form his rage takes, this should be taken with a grain of salt. Izunia became well aware of the corruption that was now contaminating Ardyn, and took on the name Lucis Caelum by the crystal's blessing, which enraged and angered Ardyn. The corruption within him also made him unable to die, which in turn festered and worsened his state- one that was taken advantage of by Ifrit the Astral who now had a vessel to his use and a means to spread the scourge further, holding no love for humanity as the others.
Izunia, now a Lucis Caelum, became imbued with light and protected the crystal as did his progeny. Aided by the wisdom and power of the Oracle, the scourge wasn't allowed to spread through their efforts though it did continue in small increments. It continued to darken the light, but on a whole, remained in control with the efforts of the new Lucis Caelum line, as well as the hunters coming up across the land. With time though, and the power of the scourge strengthening, the crystals of other kingdoms lost their power but the crystal of Insomnia continued to maintain its light and power.
Ardyn, in the mean time, became Ardyn Izunia, mostly to lay shame to the name of the person who took his title and position from him. Allying himself with Niflheim and granting them the knowledge on how to enjoy greater power through the creation of daemons, he was able to amplify their presence unlike any other and in turn, caused a striking blow to the Insomnia Royal Family, whose King, Regis Lucis Caelum found himself weakened under a stronger threat than he could ever hope to fight.
Bitter and twisted, Ardyn's plan to destroy the Lucis Caelum line, and darken the world with destruction was finally put into play. And it was soon clear to the crystal that the current protector of the crystal was not going to be able to handle it- which is why, the next crystal-chosen became young Prince Noctis, who still had a chance to grow- but would eventually be needed to sacrifice his light to protect the world.
It was a fate Regis, as a father, would not wish upon his only child, yet he unwittingly, in his love, set Ardyn's — and Ifrit's grand scheme of hatred and corruption further into motion.

Ardyn Lucis Caelum
Ardyn discovers that he can absorb the scourge instead, and takes it on himself to heal people instead of killing them, as well as empowering him together with the crystal's blessing.
